周雨萱

Born in Fujian in 1993, Yuxuan graduated from the University of the Arts London in 2018. From 2019 to 2021, she worked in architectural design in Tokyo, where she first began exploring ceramics. In 2023, she established her studio.

Her inspiration is more like a feeling than a source. Through moisture and over time, clay changes in hands. She follows rather than controls. Sometimes, she thought of stones, weathered surfaces, or forms left behind by time. They will not be changed. Instead, approach it in a similar way of being—quiet, natural, and unintentional.

Her works are formed by hand-building, then oxidation firing at 1,240°C. Rather than pursuing perfection, she preserves the marks of the process and the presence of the hand. Each piece begins with a black clay body. Layers of white slip are gently applied to the surface before a transparent glaze is added. The slip settles naturally and irregularly across the clay, while the glaze captures the traces of its movement during application. This allows the surface to retain a subtle sense of time in motion.

Roughness and delicacy, matte surfaces and soft lustre co-exist, creating quiet yet richly varied textures.
